Signs That You May Need To Change Your Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are found in vehicles that have an internal combustion engine. They are essential in keeping a vehicle running. There may come a time when your spark plug fails to perform correctly. It is important to recognize signs of spark plug problems early on so that our mechanics at Jimmy’s Car Care Center can take care of the repairs.

What Are Spark Plugs?

The spark plugs are found underneath the hood. Each plug contains an electrode, an insulator, a wire, and an outer sheath. The quality of the materials that a spark plug is made of will determine the overall lifespan of the plug.

In general, spark plugs play a crucial role in maintaining engine performance, fuel efficiency, and overall combustion stability. Regular inspection and replacement of a spark plug are essential for ensuring proper engine function and preventing issues such as misfires, reduced power, and poor fuel economy.

Common Issues With Spark Plugs

There are several issues that may indicate that the spark plugs on your vehicle need to be professionally inspected or replaced. If you do not have any experience testing or replacing a spark plug, it is best to have our licensed mechanics perform the services that are needed.

Misfire

When your vehicle misfires, you may notice it making loud noises when you crank it up. These noises will come directly from underneath the hood. When you have one or more of the spark plugs are no longer working correctly, the misfiring could be indicative of an issue.

Loss of Power

If you notice a decline in your vehicle’s power, faulty spark plugs could be to blame. When the spark plugs are not able to transfer power to the engine, there will be a noticeable decrease in power. This could make it difficult to accelerate while driving up an incline.

Oil or Dirt

The outer sheath that covers the spark plug protects the internal components. If oil or dirt builds up on the outside of a spark plug, the residue could deteriorate the outer sheath. Once this occurs, the spark plug may not operate correctly.

A visual inspection can be used to determine if the spark plugs are dirty. If a small amount of oil or dirt has accumulated, one of our mechanics can clean the spark plugs. The cleaning process will often restore the condition of the plugs.

Corrosion

Corrosion may prevent a plug from operating correctly. Moisture and contaminants that come into contact with a spark plug could cause the metal surface to corrode. The corrosion will be visible to the naked eye.

Mechanic Services

Our mechanics use a combination of inspection services and diagnostic testing to determine what is wrong with a vehicle. Once your vehicle has been inspected and tested, one of our mechanics at Jimmy’s Car Care Center will outline the steps that are needed to repair the vehicle.

Inspection

Our mechanic will perform a thorough inspection under the hood. This inspection will determine the condition of the spark plugs. It will also affect which types of diagnostic testing are performed.

Diagnostic Testing

Diagnostic testing uses computer equipment to identify which parts need to be serviced. Diagnostic testing is performed onsite. Your vehicle will be secured then the testing equipment will be hooked up. Once the diagnostics have been reviewed, our mechanic will be able to pinpoint which type of repair work will be necessary.
